System Restore : Basics

Usually every often we install several softwares in our computer which may be required for us. They may be office softwares, drivers, antivirus or games.

Some times, the installation of some of these softwares may cause un expected PC problems. The screen may be rotated 90 degree or your modem may not work or worse your windows may not start. What to do? how to recover your PC to working state?

Usually you will immidiately call your service engineer who will fix it for a hefty fee. All these problems can be prevented, if you use System Restore properly.

System Restore is a special feature of Windows, which helps you to bring back your computer to previous working state. Usually often you are suggested to create a point which helps windows remember your computers current state which is known as System Restore point. This System Restore point remembers all your Operating system settings including the softwares, drivers installed and registry status at the time of its creation.

Once this Restore point is created, you can restore your pc to its earlier working state any time using this Restore point.

Remember that, when you use System Restore, Whatever the changes you made to your pc after creating a Restore Point will be deleted forever. This includes your document files, memos etc too.

System Restore : Use

To start System Restore, Follow the following Menu Chain ..

Start => Programs => Accessories => System Tools => System Restore

When started, System Restore will give two options to use. The first item helps you to use an already created System Restore point to Restore your computer to earlier time. And the second option lets you create a restore point newly.

Both of them are self explanatory and use them carefully.

One last thing to remember is Creating Restore Points needs a considerable amount of disk space. If you have enough space on your system drive you can take full advantages of System Restore when you have PC problems.

If you dont have enough space or need to free up some space on your hard disk, you can try disabling System Restore utility. You can learn more about Enabling and Disabling System Restore in Windows here.

Remember that, System Restore is not available in earlier versions of Windows like Windows 95, 98 or NT. You can use it with Windows ME, XP, 2000 or newer editions.
