Enabling and disabling system restore

By default, Windows will have System Restore turned on. Hence even if you dont create a System Restore point yourself, windows still may have some Restore points which are automatically created.

If you have come to this page directly or know nothing about System Restore, it is highly recommended to read this System Restore Basics tutorial here first.

As we have already understood, System Restore uses a huge amount of space for backing up the data for Restore points. If you have less storage space, you may want to delete and disable all restore points for recovering valuable disk space.

Another situation may be, when the PC is infected by a Virus. Most of the current Viruses, once entering your PC, makes their own backups inside the System Restore directories. Hence if you find a virus inside a System Restore directory, it may be a better idea to clear all System Restore points to get rid of all strains of the Virus infection.

Here are the steps for Enabling or Disabling the System Restore:

  • Right Click on your desktop's My Computer Icon. And click "Properties" menu item.

    • Right Click On My Computer Icon
  • Click "Performance" tab in the System Properties Window.
  • Click "File System.." button at the bottom left.
  • In the File System Properties window, click "Troubleshooting" tab.
  • Turn On[check] "Disable System Restore" option if you need to disable System Restore.
    • Enable or Disable System Restore
  • Turn Off[uncheck] "Disable System Restore" option if you need to enable System Restore.

Disabling System Restore is not recomended. It should be disabled only if there is a real advantage by doing so.
