modem cannot detect dial tone

- suren 2006-08-20
I'm using a old Pentium III 700 Mhz PC with dialup internet connection. My modem is Dlink 56k internal modem.

The PC was just fine and i was able to connect to internet without problems until yesterday. After re installing my Windows yesterday, now my PC says It cannot detect the dial tone to connect to my ISP. what may be the problem?

Please help me.

Check the modem cable connection with your telephone line. It should be connected to the "line" jack of your modem. If it is OK, try checking the ringtone thru telephone instrument itself. If you are not getting the ringtone there too, there is a problem with your telephone and not your computer or modem.

Try adding the string ATX0 to the modem extra settings from Modem Properties Window.

Some times this solves the dial tone problem.

dial tone problems may also be due to poor dial tone by your telephone service provider. you can try turning off the dial tone detection as follows..

1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Open "Modems" Applet.
3. Select your listed Internal Modem.
4. Click Properties button for the modem.
5. Turn off "Wait for dial tone before dialling" option.
6. Click OK.

Some times this will solve your problem.
